The 8th of January 2014. I’ve known this date as it was a life changing event for me and something that I’ve been thinking about for quite a while now. This was my date that I would fly to California to become a touring professional disc golf player. Besides this being a dream of mine for my entire life, I was now excited and thrilled it was actually going to happen…but I also felt nervous about everything that was about to happen. Would I be able to be competitive in the US? Would I be strong enough to keep up with touring pros? How will it be without my family and friends at home for such a long time on the road? These are questions I asked myself. But finally, the excitement was a lot stronger than me being unsure about what might happen, obviously. I know it’s going to take lots of hard work to take my game to the next level, but there there is currently no better opportunity than what I was offered. This is a once in a lifetime chance for me and I’m honored to be a part of this great team and project. So I stepped onto the plane knowing that this is the first step for me towards a new, professional Disc Golf lifestyle.
My first impression of California was: “Wow, this is beautiful!” I felt like I was stuck in a video game. I’m blown away by the amazing landscapes and of course the weather here. I’m definitely not used to sunshine every day, walking around in shorts and t-shirt all the time. It makes life incredibly more enjoyable having perfect weather nonstop, each and everyday. I’ve noticed myself walking around with a smile on my face everywhere I go, It’s like a dream here.
I’ve been here for a week now and still every time I look out of the window of our new apartment I’m blown away by what I’m seeing. By our, I’m talking about the newly formed Team Discmania USA consisting of Erno Vayrynen and Avery Jenkins. It’s great living together with people that have the same goal as you do, becoming more professional, becoming healthier and making a change in disc golf. I’m a lucky man working together with Avery Jenkins who has achieved so much in this sport and he is the perfect coach and training partner for me. It’s just all around an amazing, friendly and respectful atmosphere here.
We are working on our Deep in the Game Tour every day, this tour will be a whole new level. And with Discmania’s support we will be able to line up some great stuff and I’m so looking forward to seeing all these new places. Having Avery by my side once again is perfect since he knows a lot of people and places all around the country which will make our trip somewhat easier. I have always dreamt about playing the courses I have only seen on YouTube or pictures on the internet. I truly want to thank Discmania for having faith in me and giving me this mind blowing opportunity.
All I can say really is that I’m so glad that this is happening to me. There is so much positive energy flowing in our team. My motivation is high, my chances are big. I feel ready to train harder. Ready to push myself to the next level. Life doesn’t get much better than this, right here, right now. Thanks for all the support I have been receiving, Discmania and I will keep this blog updated every week. Let’s see where this journey can take us and disc golf.
I was trying to make a fun Promo video by actually throwing the disc in the basket after talking about it. This video turned out to be a little different from what I wanted to do but I think it’s still fun to watch. Let me know what you think!
