News from the tour

Things have been so busy lately at the Discmania office in Finland, that reporting about our Pro Team’s success have been scarce this season. Even without reporting, our Team has been doing great this year, both in Europe and the US. If you haven’t been following what Will Schusterick has been up to lately, you really should. The kid has definitely found his A-game while touring with Pro’s like Dave Feldberg, Nikko Locastro and Cale Leiviska. The boys form together NonStop Disc Golf crew, which is definitely worth checking out if you haven’t already. Visit their website here or check out their latest videos on YouTube.

Playing with the other Pro’s has really helped Will to get his game on track and as an evident of this Will has won GBO, SOKY Championships and Standing Rocks Open just within the last month or so. Among the wins, Will has become a staple in the final four, as he’s been placed outside the final-4 only once this year out of the 10+ competitions he has attended. Keep an eye for Will out there on tour. He is right now definitely in top 5 of the touring pro’s this year and now that’s he has found his winning game, who knows if there’s anyone who will hold him back on this year’s Major events like Stockholm Open and PDGA Worlds.

Our Deep in the Game host Avery Jenkins has also kept himself busy by doing great in tournaments like the Memorial & GBO while still finding time market the sport. Alongside the highly acclaimed Deep in the Game instructional video series, Avery just came out with a Frisbee trick shot video with YouTube phenomenom Brodie Smith:

Meanwhile in the old Continent

Last weekend was victorious in for the Team in Europe too, as Angelica Frantz took home the title from Swiss Open in the MPO divisions with a nice 6-stroke stretch to swiss local, Natalie Holloköi. In the Open division, Jesse Heinonen, who recently became a father, started his touring season with a solid 2-place finish after his countryman Ville Piippo. There’s still a lot of great tournaments to come both sides of the pond, so be sure to check back on Team Discmania’s success on tour this year!

Interview: CPH Open TD Sinus Frank

We got a word with the Tournament Director of the event, Sinus Frank. Read his thoughts about the upcoming tournament:

Q: It’s already the seventh edition of CPH Open. For how long have you been involved with the tournament and which year is the most memorable for yourself?

SF: I have been TD of Copenhagen Open since we started in 2006, and it is a great privilige to be able still to host one of the most popular EuroTours. 2008 has probably been the most exciting year, since we back then got a 30.000 DKK cash sponsorship. We had David Feldberg come for the first time, and he hosted a “VIP clinic” for the sponsoring company on Friday before the tournament. We also had a VIP tent for the sponsoring company and their business relations during the weekend, with wine, tapas, disc golf DVDs on big screen etc. This year will probably be memorable too, since we have upgraded to 27 holes, 135 players, great tournament center, etc.

Q: What is your favorite hole in this 27-hole layout?

SF: There are many favorite holes on the course, since I designed almost all of them myself ;). But if I should pick one, I guess it should be hole 10. Although hole 24 is just really pretty, simple and still nerve wrecking ;).

Q: Which hole do you consider the toughest?

SF: The ones, that will be talked most about, will probably be 14 and 22. They seem difficult and maybe even tight/unfair, but it’s all in your mind – they can be played relatively safe. I think the most difficult hole would be #7. There are so many precise shots needed to make the par here – even though an eagle is in principle possible! Hole 17 is also difficult, compared to the par. Not many birdies will be made here.

Q: Who do you think will take the victory home this year in each division?

SF: I think David Feldberg will be hard to beat in Open division. Dave is always playing good in Europe and his form seem to be coming back. In Women division, I think Camilla Jernberg will win again like in 2011, but Ragna Bygde could be a hard competitor with her long drives. I see Master division very open this year, but if I should pick a winner, it would be Kari Vesala. He has been here many times and now some of the course and the environment. But top rated Dan Johansson has also been here many times, and if he can find his game, he can score very low. In Grandmaster I don’t think the legendary Derek Robins can be beat, and in Juniors I really don’t now – those guys are all new to me ;).

Q: What would you like to say to US players considering taking the trip next summer?

SF: US players can expect a tournament held with very high quality on all levels. The field is always the best in Europe, the course is challenging and we have some nice overall details not seen elsewhere. Just ask David Feldberg, who will play here for the third time in 2012.
We really hope to be able to host a Major in 2013, but it still depends on a few things to be settled. Here we hope to plan other tournaments close to Copenhagen Open, to make overseas players trip worthwhile with lots of disc golf in Europe to travel for.

Team Discmania victorious at Dutch Open

As we previously reported, The PDGA EuroTour kicked off last weekend in Netherlands, as Dutch Open welcomed a field of 125 players in 7 different divisions. The weekend was victorious for Team Discmania, as Anders Swärd (SWE) won the open division and Seppo Paju (FIN) placed second. Additionally Angelica Frantz (SWE) was placed at tied second place in the womens division and Discmania Junior Team’s Sven Rippel‘s (GER) victory in Juniors topped off a great weekend of Disc Golf. Full list of results here.

The tournament itself was not without controversy, as many of the players described the course as toughest they’ve ever played, and not necessarily in a good way. A vast majority of the critique surrounded the employment of numerous OB areas, many of which were canals filled with water. Some estimates even say, that a solid 6000 EUR (8000 USD) worth of plastic was lost in the canals during the tournament. This naturally left some of the players struggling with gaps in their bags and most probably affected the game of many players.

Beside the ultra-challenging course design (MPO winner Anders Swärd was the only player to settle to -3 total score, the rest of the field played over PAR), the tournament was well organized and the Dutch Open Staff have promised to return all the discs they can rescue from the canals to EuroTour’s next leg: The Copenhagen Open in just 2 weeks. Discmania will once again on top of the action in Copenhagen and we’re proud to announce that Discmania Golf Discs will be the main sponsor of Copenhagen Open 2012.
