Pro Worlds: Seppo Paju Aces at the Distance Exhibition, Schusterick at 3rd place, Aces too

The talk of the day has been our 16-year-old Team member Seppo Paju, who cashed in a nice 500 bucks at the Pro Worlds Distance Exhibition by shooting an incredible hole in one on his second shot. To Seppo’s surprise the basket was placed “a mere” 120m/395ft away from the pier so he couldn’t use the distance discs (DD2) he had with him. A quick stop at a Pro Shop didn’t get Seppo the disc he was looking for (PD2) but thankfully the second option, Innova’s Firebird got the job done. Congratulations Seppo!

Here’s the vids:

You can read Seppo’s thoughts about the ace and the tournament so far from his blog: http://seppopaju.wordpress.com/ (only in finnish)

Team Discmania & Innova member Will Schusterick was also playing hot on Thursday (and all week for that matter) and his 1061-rated round lifted him to the lead cart for Friday. Will is currently standing at the third place with 7 strokes separating him from the top position. There’s still plenty of holes to go so it’s still anyone’s game!

Preview to Presidents Cup

20th of July marks the date of the “homecoming” of the most prestigious team event in the history of Disc Golf, The Presidents Cup. This Ryder Cup -styled intercontinental match play event was founded by Discmania CEO Jussi Meresmaa in 2006 and this year it’s back in European soil after being held a day before USDGC last year. Once again the event will feature top pro’s from both sides of the pond formed together as two teams: Team USA and Team Europe. Historically Team USA has been victorious in these events and this year the predictions are on U.S. side once again, thanks to their star-studded line up of the top players of our beloved sport.

Discmania is also heavily invested in the event, as Jussi Meresmaa is the TD of the Presidents Cup and the Discmania staff have been working hard on both the Cup and the European Open that will follow Wednesdays event. Team Discmania is also well represented as both Team USA and Team Europe have Discmania Team members. Fighting for the old continent are Finns Anne Matilainen and Seppo Paju, who is also the reigning World Champ in Juniors U16 division. Discmania is represented in Team USA by USDGC Champ Will Schusterick. See the complete team line-ups below:

The scores of the Cup will be updated live as-they-happen to the opendiscgolf.com -website and stories and photos will be available in the European Open blog and beyond. Also the European Open -facebook page is something we recommend to follow for updates and latest news. After the Cup, our friends at DiscGolfPlanet.tv will be running a feature broadcast simultaneously from both sides of the pond with interviews and more so if you are not able to be at Nokia in person you might as well take a good position in that internet chair of yours ’cause on Wednesday the 20th of July Disc Golf will be what’s happening in the good old intertubes!

Oh, and by the way, if you’re into sports betting, why not put some money behind your favorite guy in the EO since it’s now listed at Unibet(!). At least to our knowledge betting for disc golf has never been possible before at a Major sports betting organization!

Team Discmania victorious on tour last weekend

will schusterick team discmania

Our Team members dominated the courses on both sides of the Atlantic last weekend. On U.S. soil the young USDGC-champ Will Schusterick cruised away to his first A-tier victory at Southern Kentucky Disc Golf Championships held at Bowling Green, Kentucky. Such names as Bradley Williams (2nd place), Nikko Locastro (3rd place) and Nate Doss (4th place) we’re no competition to Will this weekend, as he bombed solid 46 strokes under par final score with a five stroke spread to the competition. Will also reached pretty nice round ratings, especially on the first (1073) and third (1096) round. Teammate Avery Jenkins placed 7th with the final score of -32. See full list of results here.

Discmania Cash Money Tour Turku juliste

In Finland a whole new tour called Discmania Cash Money Tour saw the light of day for the first time this weekend. The first tournament in the 4 tournament series, equivalent to the U.S. National Tour, was played at the always sunny Lauste DiscGolfPark in Turku, Finland. A Turku native Seppo Paju ruled the homecourse in open division despite his sticky first round which placed him on the tied ninth place together with 5 other players. The win in Turku marked the third consecutive tournament win in open division for 16-year-old Seppo as he won both of the two tournaments he attended last weekend too. The storm warning has been given!

In women’s division, a fellow Turku native and Team Discmania member Anne Matilainen took the title with ease by a spread of 38 strokes before Laura Uusi-Rasi who was placed second. Other Team Discmania members Jesse Heinonen (8th in MPO) and Leo Piironen (10th in MPO) didn’t quite reach the level they we’re aiming for this weekend, but thankfully there’s a whole bunch of competitions left for 2011. Extra props are handed out to Discmania’s own Juho Rantalaiho who once again did a great job as the Tournament Director in Lauste.
