The Flight of Two Decades: 20 Years of Discmania

On November 14, 2006, the PDGA approved a white midrange called the MD1. It was the first disc to carry the Discmania name, and we count that day as the birth of the brand. Twenty years later, we are celebrating with a look back at how we got here and with something you can hold in your hands. Every throw has the same parts: a grip, a run-up, the release, the turn, the fade and, if everything goes right, the chains. Our story has followed the same flight.

The Grip

Long before there were discs, there was a small workshop in Finland. Founder Jussi Meresmaa's grandparents made baseballs and gloves by hand, and Jussi started working there at eight years old. "What I remember best was the smell of rubber, and my grandfather's stamp. When the logo was pressed on a baseball, the product became real."

In 1994 the city built a disc golf course next to his home. One throw was all it took. "I saw the flight of the disc. I heard the sound of chains. I was hooked."

In September 2001, Jussi started a company in his parents' garage. He had a used computer, two thousand Finnish marks from his father and two boxes of discs, which he sold from the trunk of his car. Before long, players from all over Finland were buying from him. He had a company. What he didn't have yet was a brand of his own.

The Run-Up

In 2004 Jussi made his first trip to the United States. At the United States Disc Golf Championship in Rock Hill, he introduced himself to the man who invented the modern golf disc. That man became his mentor and taught him a great deal about the game and how to grow it. Jussi brought those lessons home.

In 2005 the European Championships in Tampere and Nokia reached more than a hundred thousand viewers on Finnish national TV. The sport had an audience, but Finland had only around fifty courses. No courses meant no players, and no players meant no customers. So we started building courses ourselves, and we never stopped.

The Release

The name came from a friend's wife: "How about Discmania?" One industry veteran warned that "mania" sounded like madness, like an illness. "He was right, in a way. This is madness, in the best possible sense. Twenty years later, I still can't think of a better name for what we do."

Jussi designed the first discs himself, aiming for clean artwork and a simple naming system. Then came the MD1, and a surprise. He thought he had ordered a run of 1,000 discs. In the warehouse stood four pallets, 8,000 discs in total. "I remember saying out loud: how can we ever sell all of these?" It took years. Discmania didn't have a dream start. It had a humble one. The momentum came anyway.

In 2008 the PD arrived and became our flagship driver, and many of our top pros still throw it today. The yellow first-run PDs remain some of the most sought-after discs we have made. In 2012 the FD followed. It was a fairway driver that got Discmania into bags we had never reached before, and it is still Jussi's favourite.

The Turn

Most discs don't fly straight. At some point they turn, and ours turned west.

In a restaurant, Jussi drew a map of California on a piece of paper and asked a man named Erno to change his life. A few months later Erno said yes, and Jussi texted back: "This will be quite a ride, my friend."

Our first American headquarters was a fifteen-square-meter office in Rancho Cucamonga. We bought an old motorhome and wrapped it in Discmania colors, and the wrap cost a third of what the vehicle did. That was Discmania in one image: not much money, and all of it spent on the dream. This era gave us the discs many players still know us for. The FD3 "Doom Bird" was our first true breakout signature disc and for years our bestseller. The Cloud Breaker first appeared in a Christmas Mystery Box in 2018 and soon became the most widely known disc in our lineup. The European Open, the tournament we founded in 2006, grew into the biggest disc golf event in Europe.

Not everything flew straight. A world tour turned into a three-year detour, and the years that followed brought sleepless nights and hard decisions. None of it changed the mission: to make disc golf a global sport.

The Fade

For years, our chairman kept repeating one lesson: no single sourcing. Back then, ninety percent of what we sold came from one manufacturer. It took Jussi a long time to really hear that lesson, but once he did, everything changed.

What followed was the most secret chapter of our story. Trips across the border were made in a borrowed car. Prototypes were shipped to a home address. In northern Sweden, a company was registered under a name so boring nobody would look at it twice. Behind that name, during the peak of the pandemic, we were building our first factory.

In March 2021 a package arrived. Inside was a New P2, the first disc molded in our own factory from our own mold, fourteen years after the P2 was first released. "More than a decade of work fit into the palm of my hand," We called the announcement Day One. 14,000 people watched it live, and a run of 25,000 discs sold out in under twenty minutes. In the years that followed, Discmania grew from around twenty employees to more than sixty.

The Chains

In the summer of 2025, Jussi heard the same sound he first heard in 1994, only this time it came from the World Championships. For the first time in history, Worlds left North America and came to Tampere and Nokia, Finland. On Sunday, August 3, 2025, at The Beast, Gannon Buhr became world champion in Discmania colors. That same weekend, Niklas Anttila, who joined Discmania at fifteen, took bronze in front of his home crowd.

At the same tournament we released the first prototypes of something new: the Premier DD3. It is the result of two years of R&D, with completely new plastic, a thinner flight plate and the weight pushed to the rim. Our past and our future arrived on the same day, on the same course.

Thank you for twenty years, and thank you to everyone who have ever purchased Discmania Disc!
