European Open 2023: Day 1 Recap

Day one of European Open is in the books, and the fireworks are already starting!

Leading the Charge

Kyle Klein. One bogey, eleven birdies. Kyle just seemed unstoppable today, absolutely parking drives by the pin and converting all of his Circle 1X putts. He managed to tie it all together today, making him the solo leader after round one at ten down.

Estonia showed up to play on day one - including Team Discmania’s own Anneli Tõugjas-Männiste, who finished the day in solo 2nd place for FPO! Consistent placement seemed to be the key for her performance today. Anneli boasts the best made scramble rate and 4th best fairway hit percentage for FPO, continuing her great play throughout the European Tour. We’re excited to see her represent the Shield on lead card coverage for round 2!

Team Discmania Battling

Eagle McMahon remains well within striking distance of a repeat victory at European Open. After four pars and one bogey to start the tournament, Eagle proved why you can never count him out - especially so early in a four round tournament. Kicking it into high gear, he managed to go nine down through his next thirteen holes and finish just two strokes off our leader, Kyle Klein.

The Showstopper herself, Ella Hansen, made her European Open debut today! Once again, she’s proving to be one of the top competitors in the world sitting tied for 7th after the first round. True to the Showstopper name, she carded the only eagle on the 213 meter (699 ft) hole 18!

A Close Competition

This is just day one of the four day battle at The Beast, and the competition is thick! 32 total MPO players are within 5 strokes of the lead, including the Nordic Phenom - Niklas Anttila.

Anneli seems to be the most likely to catch FPO leader Kristin Tattar, who sits four strokes beyond Anneli. But again, anything can happen in three more rounds - behind Anneli are 10 competitors within five strokes of her.
